HPV exposure is common—and unavoidable
HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is not rare or high-risk behavior–dependent. It is extremely common. Most people will be exposed at some point in their lives—often within months to a year of becoming sexually active.
There are over 200 types of HPV. About a dozen are “high-risk” and cause cancer. Two strains alone (HPV 16 and 18) are responsible for the majority of HPV-related cancers.
Importantly, HPV is not only spread through intercourse or oral sex. Oral HPV can also be transmitted through open-mouth kissing. This means exposure can happen earlier and more easily than many parents realize.
